NCMS Business Spotlight: MEATS & FOODS

This month’s business highlight features Scott McIntosh of Meats & Foods at 247 Florida Avenue NW. Scott and his wife Ana decided to start their own business after years of working multiple roles in the restaurant industry. Meats & Foods is open Wed.-Fri. from 10am-6pm and Sat.-Sun. from 10am-4pm. Call ahead or order online and enjoy a bite to eat on their patio since it’s warming up!

When were you founded and why?
We opened Meats & Foods in August of 2014. Our goal was to create a place where you could get decent, handmade food at a reasonable price. The idea was born as we were making sausage wholesale for other bars and restaurants in DC; we thought it would work to open a small place to do simple and classic American grill items.

Tell us a little about yourself and your life.
Ana (my wife and business partner) and I have both lived and worked in restaurants and bars in DC for the last 20 years. Between the two of us, we’ve done pretty much every job—serving, bartending, cooking, washing dishes, working the door. When we’re not at work, Ana and I love going to the movies and going out to eat!

What makes Meats & Foods unique?
We have no employees: Ana and I prepare and serve all our products. We make nearly all our menu items in-house, from multiple kinds of sausage, two kinds of chili, bacon, ham, and so on. It’s a tough job to do for somebody else, but it’s very rewarding when you can make the decisions yourself. We loved the neighborhood and the space was just what we were looking for—reasonably accessible and small enough that we could run it ourselves.

How can the community support you right now?
It’s pretty simple, just grab some food every now and then! The halfsmoke and the chilito (our chili-cheese burrito) have been the bestsellers since day one!

What do you love about the neighborhood?
We live a few blocks from the business, so we’re very invested in the neighborhood. It’s like a little town inside the city, so it’s easy to meet and get to know your neighbors.
